A Quite Place.-Weekly film


A Quiet Place is a 2018 American horror film directed by John Krasinski, who stars alongside his wife, Emily Blunt. The film is produced by Michael Bay's company, Platinum Dunes.. The plot follows a family who must live life in silence while hiding from creatures which hunt exclusively by sound. The films budget was Budget $17 million and it made $213.3 million at the Box office            . Filmmakers spent their budget locally, including a purchase of 20 tons of corn, which they hired local farmers to grow. Some filming took place on a soundstage.

During filming, the crew avoided making noise so diegetic background sounds for example, the sound of rolling dice on a game board could be recorded; the sounds were amplified in post-production. In the film there was very little speech codes, this was because the characters communicate in American Sign Language to avoid making sound to link into the storyline, filmmakers hired deaf mentor Douglas Ridloff to teach ASL to the actors and to be available to make corrections.A Quite Place is evolved around the theme of fear, therefore the characters speak in sign language so they are not killed, and the theme of fear leads to the theme of family and death. The film plays on the idea of quietness as when there is a sound it is an automatic jump scare because it’s used very little in the film to start with and we get the idea it is a bad thing from the visual codes. The fact the film uses jump scares fulfils the needs of the audience, this is due to the fact that the main reason the audience watches horror films is to be scared.


The mise en scene in the film is a very clear indication to what is going on, the film makers had to do this otherwise people would not understand especially because there is no sound. For example the setting is very empty, a key scene this shown in is the supermarket scene where it is completely empty and people are helping themselves , it gives the audience the idea that something big has happened. Furthermore, the use of props such as abandon cars add to this ,this is a convention used in many films to show there has been a crisis.Many long shots are used in the film to shown the story unfold with the characters but to also see the destruction around them

    Meghan this is a great start which i feel is unfinished? You correctly identify some of the key micro features with , sound, performance and mise-en-scene, but we miss out on the narrative and a bit of story, Who is / are the protagonists and what are their goals? This would make for a more conclusive piece however what is written is done very well, fluid yet confident.

Pan's labyrinth uses film form to portray messages to the audience in many ways, it also adds effect to the most simplest devices used in film. In the opening scene of Pan's labyrinth the sound of the breathing is non-diegetic this is done to emphasise the significance of the event which has occured. To add to this the sound then turns to a diegetic sound, this allows tension to build within the audience as it creates a sense of mystery, which is then solved by the sound changing to diegetic. The cinematography in Pan's labyrinth conveys particular messages about the character and setting. For example, a low-angled shot is used to suggest the character is at rock bottom and to suggest she has little life left to live. Additionally, the camera then tilts and a panning shot is used to go into her eye. Buster Keaton: One Week, The Scarecrow, The High Sign, Cops Buster Keaton tends to use long shots to encourage the audience to look around the frame to see the joke, they allow an appreciation of the gag. Close ups usually follow up from this to show the characters reaction. He also tends to shoot face on so he is centre of attention. Keaton does this to highlight the idea that he is the joke and considered a clown; this tends to follow through on most films. In Cops there is a scene where Keaton is depicted in the foreground trying to take nap, a deep focus is used to show us that the city is unfurling in the background. Yet again Keaton is placed in the middle of the frame, this allows the audience to see how interacts with the chaotic and mechanical world.
