Under The Skin character profile.
The protagonist in Under The Skin changes throughout the film , she is represented as two polar opposites, powerful and vulnerable. The change in her persona is shown in the visual codes only as the film has little focus on showing actions through the audio codes.

In the start of the film the protagonist is presented as powerful women, she is shown as confident as she lures her next victim inn with her looks. When doing this she is shown very clearly that she is in control. When speech is used she is the one dominant in the conversation. Furthermore, the fact she is driving could signify that she is in control. She is also represented as a predator, yet again this is mainly done in the visual codes, she is seen to be going around Scotland confidently looking for someone to be her next victim, it is made very clear that this is motive.

However, towards the middle of the film and onwards her persona completely switches, she has no speech which portrays her as shy and no longer confident. Additionally, because she is quite it makes her vulnerable, she no longer seems to take the dominant roll. It seems like she does no control over herself. She is also seen to be trying to adopt a different persona when she leaves her van and try’s to eat food ,this is different, as she is not seen to be doing any of these human like activities.

Pan's labyrinth uses film form to portray messages to the audience in many ways, it also adds effect to the most simplest devices used in film. In the opening scene of Pan's labyrinth the sound of the breathing is non-diegetic this is done to emphasise the significance of the event which has occured. To add to this the sound then turns to a diegetic sound, this allows tension to build within the audience as it creates a sense of mystery, which is then solved by the sound changing to diegetic. The cinematography in Pan's labyrinth conveys particular messages about the character and setting. For example, a low-angled shot is used to suggest the character is at rock bottom and to suggest she has little life left to live. Additionally, the camera then tilts and a panning shot is used to go into her eye. Buster Keaton: One Week, The Scarecrow, The High Sign, Cops Buster Keaton tends to use long shots to encourage the audience to look around the frame to see the joke, they allow an appreciation of the gag. Close ups usually follow up from this to show the characters reaction. He also tends to shoot face on so he is centre of attention. Keaton does this to highlight the idea that he is the joke and considered a clown; this tends to follow through on most films. In Cops there is a scene where Keaton is depicted in the foreground trying to take nap, a deep focus is used to show us that the city is unfurling in the background. Yet again Keaton is placed in the middle of the frame, this allows the audience to see how interacts with the chaotic and mechanical world. This is a very iconic use of cinematography for Keaton, as he tends to prefer to get everything in one frame, this is because editing in the 20s was considered as deceiving the audience.
