What does Renton mean by " Choose life " ? How is "life"
represented in the film?
In the ending scene of Trainspotting the character Renton talks about choosing life this links to the opening scene where he juxtaposes this idea as he said then he doesn't choose life.
When Renton says this in the ending scene he is suggesting that he is deciding to live according to the norms in society, as before he did not do this ,instead he took drugs live in a dirty bedsit and shoplifted to get by.When the character says "choose life" he means that he does not want to live like that in fact he wants the opposite, he wants to "have a washing machine …nice house" . In some ways "life" in this case means to live in a humanly order. Furthermore, it could also imply that his choosing a pacific lifestyle where he is successful rather than a failure in society.Within this see Renton is walking off into a foggy distance which could suggest his walking into the future but it is unknown how it actually turn out for him, the lighting in the scene is bright which could signify that the future may be too.
Renton is the most sympathetic and relatable in some ways as he's costume is very casual which may relate to the audience more then Sick boy as he is constantly shown in suits therefore might not be as relatable. Especially when we see him in london his morals seem to be more down to earth he is more relatable to norms in society, But this depends on what section of the film that you bare focusing on.
Additionally, Trainspotting shows light on dark parts of society ,Renton is used as a vehicle to portray the moral code it shows that your friends mean nothing especially ones on drugs ,you could also argue that he turns his life around by cutting off these people.
