Lights out is a supernatural horror film, the film was directed by David F Sandberg and was his directorial debut. The film was produced by Lawrence Grey and written by Heisserer, it was also distributed by Warner brothers. Lights Out grossed 148 million against a 4.8 million budget.

The film uses dark lighting to link to the sinister theme, it gives off a unknowing feeling as the darkness leaves us in mystery. Lights Out uses different lighting techniques to link to the storyline,for example the light goes from on to off, the supernatural creature only appears in the dark. This gives the film the theme of isolation as you as the audience feels isolated from the darkness along with the characters. Additionally, the film at times uses an artificial red lighting , this almost foreshadows the future as it seems to be a warning to the Rebecca and Martin.
The protagonist in this film the character who plays the older sister, the camera tends to use tracking shots to see her in the action. We experience her and the character of her younger brother emotions by the use of close ups, these close up cut in action which builds tension as it blocks the audience knowing what's going on.

In conclusion ,the film has an approval rating of 76% based on 152 reviews, with a average rating of 6.3/10. It also uses many techniques to highlight the horror elements.

Pan's labyrinth uses film form to portray messages to the audience in many ways, it also adds effect to the most simplest devices used in film. In the opening scene of Pan's labyrinth the sound of the breathing is non-diegetic this is done to emphasise the significance of the event which has occured. To add to this the sound then turns to a diegetic sound, this allows tension to build within the audience as it creates a sense of mystery, which is then solved by the sound changing to diegetic. The cinematography in Pan's labyrinth conveys particular messages about the character and setting. For example, a low-angled shot is used to suggest the character is at rock bottom and to suggest she has little life left to live. Buster Keaton: One Week, The Scarecrow, The High Sign, Cops Buster Keaton tends to use long shots to encourage the audience to look around the frame to see the joke, they allow an appreciation of the gag. Close ups usually follow up from this to show the characters reaction. He also tends to shoot face on so he is centre of attention. Keaton does this to highlight the idea that he is the joke and considered a clown; this tends to follow through on most films. In Cops there is a scene where Keaton is depicted in the foreground trying to take nap, a deep focus is used to show us that the city is unfurling in the background. Yet again Keaton is placed in the middle of the frame, this allows the audience to see how interacts with the chaotic and mechanical world.
