The open house analysis -weekly film

The open house analysis.

The open house is an american horror film directed by Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote, The film was released on Netflix on January 19, 2018.

In the first scene loud sound effects are used to show the action rather then it being on camera, this leaves the audience in mystery. It also allows the audience to think how bad this car crash was, the screen then cuts to a still shot of a couple walking into the house all in black. This confirms to the audience that the character of the dad has died, prior to this the still shot could signify how this character's life has been put to a stand still and the family are mourning. A close up is then used of a photograph, this seems like its done to give insight to the family life before the father died, we find they was a family who was very close just down to this one shot. A tracking shot is used to show location as the family move out of there home, the shot looks like it's from one of the characters in the cars perspective as it mirrors looking out the window. Furthermore, the camera moving in this shot could connote to the family moving on , however the lighting and colours shown are very dull, therefore could show how their sadness is following them and may foreshadow the future going badly.

There is a point in the film where the camera is handheld, meaning that the shot has came cross shakey, this could foreshadow our main character's feelings as he is scared. For this part there is only a mid shot used ,so the audience barely knows what's going on. A sudden cut is then used for a dramatic impact as a woman appears from nowhere. additionally , the action on screen mirrors the sound effects , it gets louder and dense as the cut appears.

In addition, the theme of darkness is used in this film, the theme is used to symbolize the unknowing. A key prop in the feel is a torch, it almost suggests they are only shedding a small amount of light on the truth. To add to this, the door suddenly shut which could foreshadow that they are trapped in the future and there is no way out of the danger. Secondly, it could imply that doors a closed on them to prevent the truth.

The film has a very unreal ending , it doesn't follow the typical horror movie ending where they leave the house, this makes the film even darker as there is no solution to their problem.
