weekly film analysis[29th]

Don’t breathe weekly film analysis.

Don’t breathe in a horror film directed by Fede Álvarez and written by Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues, The film was produced by Ghost House Pictures and Good Universe. Additionally, IT received largely positive critical reviews and grossed over 157 million dollars.
The producers of this film has made the audience feel bad for our main characters even though they rob innocent people. Before we see the robbery there is a cut to their home life which in some ways makes the audience justify their actions. Throughout the film we see the robbers as the good guys and the home owner as the bad guys.

The film is based on a robbery that has gone wrong, throughout the film the use of sound effects is emphasised for irony robbers should be quite. This is done the most at the beginning when the robbers enter the house and are caught out. The sounds of floorboards are made really dramatic as it leaves the audience on their seats as they are bound to be caught. During production this was  deliberately done to foreshadow our protagonists being caught. Furthermore this is done again to exaggerate the gun shot noise, this is because the sound of a gun shoot has negative connotations such as danger, death and crime, so therefore dramatizing it indicates our main characters are in danger and that the tables have turned from how the blind man was in danger to now them. The music starts of subtlety but then gets louder as the robbers become in more danger this could signify their levels of fear rising.
To add onto this a low angle shot of our “victim” is shown which shows he has the upper hand and the power in this situation. Furthermore in this shot there is a light source hitting one side of his face this could imply that there is another side of him which we are yet to find out.

This leads onto the fact that the producers of this film has made us feel bad for our main charters even though they rob people who are vulnerable. Before we see the robbery there is a cut to their home life which in some ways makes the audience justify their actions. Throughout the film we see the robbers as the good guys and the home owner as the bad guys.
Don’t Breathe cleverly juxtaposes two ideas using lighting, for example before our 3 character’s enters the blind character’s home the lighting is bright and warm suggesting safety. However, as soon as they enter the home the lighting is suddenly much darker, this connotes to danger and the unknowing. The dark lighting also indicates that the future is unknown for our protagonists. There is a point in the film where the lighting dramatically changes, suddenly lights are switched on revealing a young girl tied up, this lights turning on signifies the reveal of the home owners darkest secrets, this is a major turning point in the feel as this lonely blind character isn’t as vulnerable as he is
represented to be earlier on in the film.
