Breathe analysis

Breathe analysis

Breathe is a biological drama/romance film which is directed by Andy Serkis and produced by Jonathan Cavendisha. The film is about Robin Cavendisha, who has been paralysed with polio aged 28, the film is based on a true story from the producers childhood, the film was set in the 1960s onwards.

The film tells the story of a young man who has been paralysed with polio that has a wife and a son; he is told he has three months to live after being diagnosed, despite this he travels the world hoping to transform people’s lives that are like him. Andrew Garfield is the actor who plays Robin Cavendisha is described has an adventurous young man who is still one of the longest-living polio survivors in Britain. The storyline structured in a linear order which developed the audience’s emotions as we felt like they were on his journey with him for instants we knew him before polio than we got to see the steps leading up to it and the steps leading to his death. This was and effective especially in the visual codes as the audience got to know Robin and his family, as the camera constantly tracked his movements using a tracking shot, themain focus was always on him therefore the audience built am emotional connection with him. My favourite shot was when he was being sneaked out of hospital as it was an intense moment because they could have been caught but also because before everything was sad, so it was an uplifting moment. Furthermore throughout the audio codes there was a sense of humour which gave the film a positive tone for example when Robin became close to death due to the dog pulling the wire out, this was an ever traumatic problem because no one realised, however when resolved he said “that was a interesting experience”, this gave the film a happier tone. Moreover the theme of love did this too; it made the film have a positive view on life instead of making it depressing.

Cavendisha son Jonathan runs The Imaginarium Studios Production Company alongside director Andy Sekis and writer of screenplay William Nicholson. Due to Jonathan being Robin’s son, it made the storyline more powerful as it was his first-hand experience.

Overall the films and visual codes and audio codes worked really well together as they gave an uplifting atmosphere for the audience , also the use of cinematography emphasised how dramatic the storyline was because the audience always had eyes on it but they still was uncertain of the future just like the rest of the family.
