Soft and Wasp comparison

Compare Soft and Wasp.

This essay will compare and contrast Wasp and Soft.Wasp comes under the genre of drama and is directed by Andrea Arnold, this short film is set in dartford . The film starts Natalie Press as a struggling single parent as her children are in the way of her meeting her long term friend Danny Dyer. Soft is directed by Simon Ellis ,this film also follows the genre of a drama because it follows the development of realistic charecrters,Soft film seems to be set in the suburbs .

Wasp is a short film taken from a working class  perspective ,we get this idea from the establishing shot used near the beginning that shows  a estate this makes the audience pre-judge on what they would are like based on stereotypes ,for example we might persum they are rough and they use non standard english dialect. Wasp tends to follow this stereotype to add emphasis on the type of area they live in. Whereas soft has used an establishing shot of a house that would tends to be owned by people in the middle class ,also we see a  guy wearing a suit which  is significant , as it shows the family being represented is middle class. However Wasp explores the themes of poverty and neglect ,it is first shown when a mid shot of the clothing that the family was wearing,it  then zooms to show certain details such as the mums feet and the little girls top, we understand this theme of neglect before we have seen any action ,e.g when we see how dirty the clothing is. The theme is emphasized further by the use of cinematography, while the young children were left outside a pub alone, a high angled shot was used to portray them as vulnerable and to show the importance to how young they actual were compared to how old they was treated by their mother.

Although both films shows the elements of different classes. Soft shows elements of the working class by using a bad quality camera to show teens from a working class family videoing a fight ,this was a clever use of cinematography because when the young group of teens were shown the camera quality was worse than when the middle class family was shown, this implies that there is a behaviour barrier between them.Soft also explores the theme of violence, however it uses the theme of violence to gently introduce the theme of irony, this is shown in the storyline when the dad tells the son to defend himself after he was beaten up by the group of thugs earlier on, although, when the dad was attacked and became face to face with them he told the son to not do anything. In the end the son is the one to remove the group from his doorstep by an act of violence, which connoted to him being stronger than his dad who originally told him to fight back

Overall both films explored social class by using the concept of family ,however Wasp focused more on working class than Soft.
